Approximately between 1970 and 1977. The airport was last depicted on the 1970 Cleveland Sectional Chart but was no longer present on the 1977 edition. By the early 1990s, construction for new development was underway on the property.
Primarily economic reasons driven by rapid suburban development. The airport's location became extremely valuable following the expansion of Interstate 90 through the area. The rising property values made it far more profitable for the land to be sold for commercial development rather than to continue operations as a small general aviation airport.
The site of the former airport has been completely redeveloped and is now a major commercial and retail hub. The land where the runway and hangars once stood is now occupied by large-format retail stores, including a Cabela's and a Menards, as well as numerous other shops, restaurants, and extensive parking lots. There are no remaining physical traces of the original airfield.
Keller Airport was a small, privately-owned, public-use general aviation airfield that served the local community of Avon and surrounding areas. It was typical of the many small airfields that supported civil aviation in the post-World War II era. Operations primarily consisted of recreational flying, flight instruction, and private aircraft storage. According to a 1962 directory, it featured a single 2,400-foot sod runway (Runway 9/27) and a few small hangars. It provided a vital, local hub for aviation enthusiasts before the area was transformed by commercial growth.
There are zero plans or prospects for reopening Keller Airport. The original site has been permanently and completely repurposed for high-value commercial use, making it physically and economically impossible to re-establish an airport at this location.
