Approximately April 1979. The heliport ceased operations concurrently with the bankruptcy and shutdown of its sole operator, New York Airways.
Economic failure of the operator. New York Airways, the airline that ran the service, ceased all operations in 1979. The airline's financial viability was severely impacted by high operating costs and was dealt a final blow by a fatal 1977 accident at its Pan Am Building heliport, which eroded public confidence and led to the closure of its most critical route.
The site is now used for commercial retail space. The Alexander's department store building, which housed the heliport on its roof, was demolished in the mid-1990s. The area has since been redeveloped as part of the expanded Roosevelt Field Mall and is now occupied by other large retail stores.
The heliport was located on the roof of the Alexander's department store at the Roosevelt Field Mall. It was a significant suburban hub in New York Airways' scheduled helicopter network from the 1960s until 1979. The service provided rapid transit for shoppers and commuters between Long Island and key Manhattan and airport locations, including the Pan Am Building, the Wall Street Heliport, and JFK and LaGuardia airports. It represented a pioneering, though ultimately unsustainable, model for high-speed urban and suburban air travel, using aircraft like the Boeing Vertol 107-II and Sikorsky S-61.
None. There are no known plans or prospects to reopen a heliport at this location. The original infrastructure has been completely removed, and the economic, logistical, and regulatory challenges of re-establishing such a service make it highly unfeasible.
