Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 26, 2025
Closure Date

Circa 1963-1965. The airport was still listed on aeronautical charts in 1963 but was no longer depicted by 1967. It was replaced by the new McCurtain County Airport, which first appeared on the 1965 chart, indicating the closure happened within that timeframe.

Reason for Closure

The airport was closed because it was replaced by a new, larger, and more modern facility, the McCurtain County Regional Airport (K2O4), located a few miles to the south. This is a common occurrence where an early, small municipal airfield is superseded by a more capable county or regional airport to accommodate larger aircraft and increased traffic.

Current Status

The airport site is now private land and has been returned to agricultural use, appearing as a pasture or hay field. No buildings, hangars, or airport infrastructure remain. However, the faint, straight-line outline of the former north-south runway is still discernible in satellite and aerial imagery.

Historical Significance

This site was the original Idabel Municipal Airport. It was established sometime between 1945 and 1953 and served as the primary airfield for the city of Idabel for approximately 15-20 years. It was a modest general aviation facility, featuring a single 2,400-foot unpaved turf runway (oriented north/south as Runway 17/35). It supported private flying and light commercial activities typical for a small American town in the post-WWII era before being made obsolete by its replacement.

Reopening Prospects

There are no known plans or prospects for reopening. The land is privately owned, has been out of service for nearly 60 years, and the aviation needs of Idabel and the surrounding county are fully served by the active McCurtain County Regional Airport (K2O4).
