Approximately 1970-1971. The airport was last depicted on the 1970 Wichita Sectional Chart and was no longer present on the 1971 edition of the same chart.
The primary reason for its closure was replacement. A new, larger, and better-equipped public airport, the Monett Municipal Airport (now Monett Regional Airport, ICAO: KHFJ), was constructed just a half-mile north of the Bil-Mitch site, rendering the smaller, private field obsolete.
The site has been completely redeveloped for industrial use and is now part of the Monett Industrial Park. The land where the runway and facilities once stood is now occupied by large manufacturing and processing plants, including facilities for Schreiber Foods and EFCO Corporation (a Pella company). Roads, such as Chapell Drive, now bisect the former runway path, and no visible traces of the airport remain.
Bil-Mitch Airport was a privately-owned, public-use general aviation airfield that served the Monett community from the early 1950s until its closure. It was reportedly named after its owners, Bill and Mitchell Vollenweider. The airport featured a single 2,200-foot turf runway (17/35) and catered to local private pilots and their aircraft. For nearly two decades, it was the primary aviation facility for the area before being superseded by the current municipal airport.
There are zero prospects for reopening Bil-Mitch Airport. The land has been irreversibly repurposed for heavy industrial use, and the city of Monett is well-served by the nearby Monett Regional Airport (KHFJ), making a second airfield at the original site both unfeasible and unnecessary.
