Approximately 2003-2004. The airport was still listed as active in the 2003 FAA Airport/Facility Directory, but aerial imagery from 2004 shows the initial stages of residential construction on the property, indicating operations had ceased by then.
The primary reason for closure was economic, specifically the sale of the airport land for a more profitable use: residential real estate development. The expansion of suburban communities from the Minneapolis-St. Paul metro area increased land values, making the site more valuable for housing than as a private airfield.
The site of the former airport has been completely redeveloped into a residential housing subdivision, which is aptly named 'Seven Hills'. In a clear homage to the site's aviation history, the streets within the development have aviation-themed names, such as 'Aviation Avenue', 'Aeronautics Avenue', 'Propeller Drive', and 'Tailwind Trail'. The houses and streets of this subdivision now occupy the land where the runway and hangars once stood.
Seven Hills Airport, which used the FAA identifier 8Y4, was a privately owned, public-use (later private-use) general aviation airport. It was not depicted on aeronautical charts in the early 1970s but was established by the 1980s. It featured a single north-south turf runway (18/36) approximately 2,600 feet long. The airport served the local aviation community, providing a base for recreational pilots and their light single-engine aircraft. It had a few small hangars and was a typical example of the small, privately-owned airfields that were once common across the United States. Its significance was local, supporting a small community of pilots rather than handling commercial or military operations. The ICAO code 'US-10403' is a non-standard identifier used by some third-party databases and is not an official ICAO designation.
There are zero prospects for reopening. The land has been permanently and irreversibly converted to residential use with the construction of homes, roads, and associated infrastructure, making any future aviation activity at this location impossible.
