Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 26, 2025
Closure Date

Approximately late 1969 to early 1970. The airfield was depicted on the 1969 Chicago Sectional Chart but was no longer shown on the 1970 edition.

Reason for Closure

While not officially documented, the closure was almost certainly due to economic reasons and competition from the nearby Warsaw Municipal Airport (now Warsaw Municipal Airport, KASW). The larger municipal airport offered superior facilities, including paved runways, which drew away general aviation traffic. Small, private grass strips like Berkey Field became less viable as aviation needs modernized. The Warsaw Flying Club, a primary user, eventually relocated its operations to the municipal airport.

Current Status

The site of the former Berkey Field has been completely converted back to agricultural use. There are no visible remnants of the runway, hangars, or any other aviation infrastructure. Modern satellite imagery shows the area as active farmland, located just south of the US-30 highway.

Historical Significance

Berkey Field was a small, private general aviation airfield established sometime between 1949 and 1954. It was operated by Carl Berkey and featured a single, 2,000-foot unpaved turf runway. Its primary historical significance was serving as the original home of the Warsaw Flying Club, which was founded in 1954. The airfield handled light, single-engine aircraft for recreational flying and flight training for club members and local pilots before operations consolidated at the larger municipal airport.

Reopening Prospects

None. There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Berkey Field. The land has been used for agriculture for over 50 years, and the local aviation needs are fully served by the active and well-maintained Warsaw Municipal Airport (KASW). Re-establishing an airport at this location is considered highly improbable.
