Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 26, 2025
Closure Date

Approximately 2011. The heliport's closure is directly linked to the shutdown of the Raytheon facility it served. Raytheon announced the plant's closure in 2009 and completed the process by 2011, at which point the heliport ceased to have a purpose and was officially closed.

Reason for Closure

Economic and corporate restructuring. The heliport was a private-use facility exclusively for the adjacent defense plant. The owner, Raytheon, closed the entire Indianapolis facility and relocated its operations to other states, making the dedicated heliport obsolete.

Current Status

The site has been completely redeveloped. The former Raytheon plant and the associated heliport were demolished between 2019 and 2021. The land has been repurposed and is now part of a modern industrial and logistics park. A large, new warehouse and distribution center, developed by Ambrose Property Group, now stands at the heliport's former coordinates.

Historical Significance

The heliport's significance is tied to the high-security industrial site it served. The location was originally the U.S. Naval Avionics Center (NAWC), a key military facility for airborne electronics. Following its privatization under the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) process in 1996, the plant was taken over by Hughes Aircraft Company and subsequently acquired by Raytheon in 1997. The heliport, officially known as AEC Heliport (FAA LID: 81II), was used for corporate and VIP transport, likely moving executives, government officials, and potentially high-value components to and from the secure defense electronics plant. It was never open to the public.

Reopening Prospects

None. The physical infrastructure of the heliport has been permanently removed, and the land has been fundamentally repurposed for large-scale commercial logistics. There are no known plans or prospects for rebuilding or reopening a heliport at this location.
