Circa 1999. The heliport's designation became obsolete following the merger of Marian Health Center and St. Luke's Regional Medical Center.
Institutional Merger and Consolidation. In 1999, Marian Health Center merged with St. Luke's Regional Medical Center to form the new Mercy Medical Center - Sioux City (now known as MercyOne Siouxland Medical Center). This merger led to the consolidation of services and facilities. The heliport associated with the former Marian Health Center was either replaced by or redesignated as the primary heliport for the newly formed medical center, making the 'Marian Health Center Nr 3 Heliport' designation and its ICAO code (US-10370) defunct.
The site is the location of the fully operational MercyOne Siouxland Medical Center. The hospital continues to be a major trauma center for the region and operates a modern, active rooftop heliport known as Mercy Air Care Heliport (FAA Identifier: 5IA2). The physical location of the old heliport has been integrated into the modern hospital campus, effectively being replaced by the current, upgraded facility.
The heliport was a critical piece of infrastructure for the Marian Health Center, which was formed in 1977 from the merger of two other local hospitals. Its primary and sole operation was to handle medical helicopter flights (medevac). It served as a landing zone for air ambulances transporting critically ill or injured patients from accident scenes and smaller regional hospitals to the advanced care facilities at Marian Health Center. This capability was vital for the emergency medical services in the tri-state Siouxland region, significantly reducing transport times for life-threatening cases.
There are no prospects for reopening the heliport under its former name or ICAO code. The entity it served no longer exists, and its function has been completely superseded by the modern, active heliport at MercyOne Siouxland Medical Center. The old designation is permanently retired.
