Approximately 2007-2008. The heliport was officially scheduled for deletion from aeronautical charts following a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) meeting in February 2008, indicating it had ceased operations by or before that time.
The primary reason for the closure was economic redevelopment. The heliport was located on prime waterfront real estate in Stamford's South End, which was acquired by the developer Building and Land Technology (BLT) for the massive Harbor Point project. The entire industrial area, including the heliport site, was demolished and redeveloped into a high-density, mixed-use neighborhood.
The site of the former heliport is completely unrecognizable and has been fully integrated into the Harbor Point development. The exact coordinates now correspond to an area occupied by luxury high-rise apartment buildings (including The Allure and Beacon at Harbor Point), a public waterfront esplanade, park space, and a marina. There are no physical remnants of the heliport.
The Canal Street Heliport was a key piece of infrastructure supporting Stamford's status as a major corporate and financial hub outside of New York City. Its primary function was to provide rapid executive and corporate helicopter transport. It offered a crucial link for business leaders traveling to and from Manhattan's heliports (such as Wall Street and East 34th Street) and the major NYC-area airports (JFK, LaGuardia, Newark), allowing them to bypass heavy road and rail traffic. The heliport was instrumental in attracting and retaining major corporations in Stamford.
There are no active plans to reopen the heliport, and prospects are extremely low. In 2017, the developer of Harbor Point proposed building a new private-use heliport nearby, but the plan was met with significant public opposition from the thousands of new residents in the area, who cited noise and safety concerns. The proposal was subsequently withdrawn. Given the dense residential character of the redeveloped neighborhood, any future plans for a heliport at or near the original site would likely face similar strong community resistance.
