Approximately 2008-2010. Analysis of historical satellite imagery shows the helipad was clearly marked and operational in 2006, but the markings had faded and the area was being used for parking by 2011. The closure aligns with the period of the Great Recession, which heavily impacted tourism.
Primarily economic reasons. The heliport was a commercial venture supporting a helicopter tour company. Such businesses, which rely on discretionary tourist spending, were severely affected by the economic downturn that began in 2008. The operator ceased flights from this location due to a decline in business, and the landowner (Goldfield Ghost Town) repurposed the land.
The site of the former helipad is now an unmarked, gravel overflow parking lot for the Goldfield Ghost Town. There are no remaining structures, fences, or ground markings to indicate that a heliport ever existed at the location.
The heliport's significance was purely local and commercial. It served as a base of operations for scenic helicopter tours, offering a significant attraction for visitors to the Goldfield Ghost Town. Operations consisted of flights providing aerial views of the surrounding landmarks, including the Superstition Mountains, Weaver's Needle, the Apache Trail, and Canyon Lake. The flights were typically conducted by tour operators using small helicopters like the Robinson R44.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the heliport. The land has been fully repurposed for parking, and other helicopter tour companies in the region now operate from established airports like Falcon Field Airport (KFFZ) in nearby Mesa. Re-establishing a heliport at this site would require a new agreement with the property owner and new regulatory approvals.
