Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 26, 2025
Closure Date

Circa 2003. The airport was confirmed operational in a 2002 aerial photograph but was undergoing demolition for redevelopment in a 2004 photograph, placing its closure in the intervening period.

Reason for Closure

Economic reasons, specifically urban encroachment and lucrative real estate development. Located in the rapidly growing suburbs southwest of Atlanta, the airport's land became more valuable for residential housing than for aviation. The property was sold and redeveloped into a housing community.

Current Status

The site has been completely redeveloped into a residential subdivision named 'The Parks at Durham Lakes'. The former runway, taxiways, and hangar areas are now covered with single-family homes, streets, and green spaces. In a nod to the site's history, the streets within the development bear aviation-themed names, such as Cessna Drive, Piper Way, Stinson Drive, and Mooney Circle.

Historical Significance

Hilltop Airport (former FAA LID: GA56) was a privately owned, private-use general aviation airfield. It first appeared on aeronautical charts in the early 1970s and served the local aviation community for approximately 30 years. The facility featured a single unpaved turf runway, designated 5/23, with a length of about 2,600 feet. It was known for having a notable uphill slope when landing on Runway 5. The airport catered to private pilots and light single-engine aircraft, with a few small hangars located on the north side of the property. It represented a typical small, community-focused airfield for recreational flying. Note: The ICAO identifier 'US-1035' is not a standard FAA or ICAO code; the airport's official FAA Location Identifier was GA56.

Reopening Prospects

None. The land has been permanently repurposed for high-density residential use. Reopening the airport is not feasible as it would require the acquisition and demolition of an entire, fully occupied housing development.
