The airport was closed sometime between 1991 and 1999. Aerial photography from 1991 shows a clear, operational runway, while photos from 1999 show that a center-pivot irrigation system had been installed over the site, making it unusable for aircraft.
The closure was due to economic and land-use reasons. The land was converted back to full-time agricultural use. The installation of a large center-pivot irrigation system directly on the former runway indicates the land became more valuable for farming than for aviation.
The site is currently active farmland. The area of the former north-south runway is now cultivated for crops and is irrigated by the center-pivot system that led to its closure. The faint outline of the airstrip is sometimes still visible in satellite imagery depending on the season, crop growth, and soil conditions.
Nelson Airport was a small, private turf airstrip, also known as 'Nelson Landing Strip'. Its historical significance is minimal and purely local. It was likely used by the landowner for personal recreational or agricultural flying. The airport was not depicted on most major aeronautical charts, suggesting it was not intended for public use. Its most notable official record is its appearance on a 1982 USGS topographical map. It handled no known commercial, military, or significant general aviation operations.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the airport. The land is productively used for agriculture, and the permanent irrigation infrastructure makes a return to aviation use economically unfeasible and highly improbable. The prospect for reopening is effectively zero.
