The airport closed sometime between 1981 and 1990. It was last depicted on the 1981 Dallas Sectional Chart but was no longer listed on the 1990 edition. A 1995 USGS aerial photo confirms the runway was no longer in active use by that time.
The specific reason for the closure is not officially documented, which is common for small, privately owned airfields. The closure was most likely due to economic factors, such as the rising value of the land for commercial development along the Interstate 35 corridor, or the owner deciding to cease operations for personal reasons (e.g., retirement, sale of property). There is no indication it was closed due to a specific accident or for military conversion.
The site of the former airport has been completely redeveloped for industrial and commercial use. Satellite imagery of the coordinates shows the property is now occupied by a commercial business, likely involved in transportation, storage, or heavy equipment, with numerous trucks, trailers, and vehicles parked on the grounds. The original hangar building appears to still exist but has been repurposed for the current business. While the faint outline of the former north/south runway can still be discerned, it is completely obstructed and unusable. A direct legacy of the airport remains in the local geography: a road bordering the property to the west is named 'Airfield Drive'.
Lane Field was a private general aviation airport established between 1963 and 1965. It was owned and operated by E.J. Lane. When active, it served the local aviation community in and around Sanger, Texas. Operations were limited to light, single-engine aircraft typical of general aviation. According to aeronautical charts from the 1960s and 1970s, the airport featured a single unpaved turf or dirt runway with a length of approximately 2,600 feet. It included at least one hangar for aircraft storage. Its significance was purely local, providing a base for private pilots rather than serving any commercial or military function.
There are no plans or prospects for reopening Lane Field. The land has been fully converted to a non-aviation commercial use, and the necessary infrastructure, such as a clear runway, no longer exists. The significant development in the surrounding area makes re-establishing an airport on this site infeasible.
