Approximately 2002-2004. Aeronautical charts from 1999 still depicted the airport as active, but aerial imagery from 2004 shows the initial phases of residential construction underway on the former runway.
Economic reasons, specifically for residential real estate development. The airpark was a private facility, and as the Brooksville area grew, the land became more valuable for housing than for its use as a private airfield. The site was sold and redeveloped into the housing community that exists today.
The site is now a residential housing community, which has retained the name 'Sunset Strip Airpark.' The former runway and taxiways have been completely replaced by homes with large lots, paved streets, and other suburban infrastructure. The main road built over the old airfield is named 'Aviation Loop,' which serves as a direct acknowledgment of the land's previous use. Some of the homes feature large, detached garages or workshops that are similar in size and style to aircraft hangars.
Sunset Strip Airpark was a classic example of a private residential airpark or 'fly-in community.' Its primary function was to serve a small community of general aviation pilots who owned homes on or adjacent to the property. It featured a single unpaved turf runway, approximately 2,600 feet long (designated 9/27). The key feature was that residents could taxi their personal aircraft from the runway directly to hangars located at their homes. It catered exclusively to private, light, single-engine aircraft and was not a commercial or military facility. Its significance was purely local, serving as a recreational hub for its pilot residents.
Zero. The prospect of reopening the airport is nonexistent. The land is fully and permanently occupied by the residential development, including dozens of homes, streets, and utilities. There is no remaining infrastructure or open land that could be converted back into a runway or any other aviation facility.
