October 18, 2007. The heliport ceased operations following the complete relocation of Children's Hospital Colorado in September 2007.
The heliport was closed as a direct result of the relocation of its parent facility, Children's Hospital Colorado. The hospital moved from its historic campus in downtown Denver to the new Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora, Colorado. As the heliport's sole function was to serve the hospital, it was decommissioned once the hospital moved.
The site of the former heliport and the entire old Children's Hospital campus has been completely redeveloped. The original hospital buildings were demolished, and the land is now occupied by the modern Saint Joseph Hospital campus. The physical structure of the heliport no longer exists.
The Children's Hospital Heliport, which operated under the former FAA identifier CD32, was a critical piece of infrastructure for pediatric emergency medicine in Denver and the wider Rocky Mountain region. For decades, it was the primary receiving point for air ambulances, such as Flight For Life, transporting critically ill and injured infants and children. The heliport enabled rapid access to the hospital's specialized pediatric trauma center, neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), and other critical care services for patients from across Colorado and neighboring states, significantly improving survival rates and outcomes for countless children.
There are no plans or prospects for reopening this heliport. It is permanently closed, and its original site has been repurposed. The need for pediatric air medical transport is now served by the modern heliport at the new Children's Hospital Colorado campus in Aurora (FAA: 0CO2), while the adjacent Saint Joseph Hospital also operates its own heliport (FAA: 0CO3).
