Approximately 1974. The airport was replaced by the new Monett Municipal Airport (now Monett Regional Airport, KHFJ), which was officially activated in May 1974. The last known aeronautical chart depicting McClurg Airport was from 1972, indicating its closure coincided with the opening of the new facility.
Replacement and economic development. The original airport was small, with a relatively short runway that could not accommodate larger aircraft like business jets. To support local industry and modern aviation needs, the city of Monett constructed a new, larger airport southwest of the city. The land of the former McClurg Airport was then repurposed for industrial growth.
The site has been completely redeveloped and is now the Monett Industrial Park. The former runway and airport grounds are occupied by large industrial facilities for companies such as EFCO Corporation and Schreiber Foods. A road that runs through the center of the industrial park, closely following the path of the former runway, is named 'Airport Drive', serving as a historical reminder of the site's past use.
Originally established as Monett Municipal Airport sometime between 1935 and 1942, it served as the primary airport for the city of Monett for over 30 years. Initially featuring unpaved runways, it was a hub for general aviation. In the late 1960s, it was renamed McClurg Airport and upgraded with a single paved northwest/southeast runway (approximately 2,800 feet long). It played a key role in the local transportation infrastructure before being rendered obsolete by the need for a more modern facility.
None. The site is fully developed as a major industrial park, which is vital to the local economy. The city of Monett is well-served by the modern and more capable Monett Regional Airport (KHFJ), eliminating any need or possibility of reopening the original McClurg Airport.
