Approximately between 1998 and 2004. The airport was depicted on the 1998 Detroit Sectional Aeronautical Chart but was no longer shown on the 2004 version. The FAA officially lists its status as 'Decommissioned'.
The specific reason is not officially documented, which is common for small, private airfields. However, evidence strongly suggests it was closed following a private decision by the owner. Brenneke Airport (also known by its former FAA identifier, 2IN8) was a private farm strip named after its owner, Walter Brenneke. Closures of such airfields are typically due to the owner's retirement or death, the sale of the land, or the high cost of maintenance and insurance relative to its use. There is no indication of closure due to an accident, military conversion, or broader economic collapse.
The site of the former airport has been completely returned to agricultural use. High-resolution satellite imagery of the coordinates shows that the land where the runway once existed is now a cultivated farm field, seamlessly integrated with the surrounding properties. There are no visible remnants of the runway, taxiways, or any airport buildings like hangars.
Brenneke Airport was a small, private general aviation airfield. It was operational from at least the late 1960s. It featured a single north/south turf runway, listed in the 1982 AOPA Airports USA Directory as being 2,600 feet long. The airport served the local general aviation community and was likely used for recreational flying and possibly agricultural purposes (crop dusting) related to the surrounding farmland. It was a typical example of the numerous private grass strips that were common across rural America in the latter half of the 20th century.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Brenneke Airport. The land has been fully reclaimed for farming, and all aviation infrastructure has been removed. Re-establishing an airport on the site would require purchasing the land from the current owner and significant investment to rebuild all necessary facilities, making it highly improbable.
