The exact date is not officially recorded, but evidence from aeronautical charts indicates the airport closed sometime between 2009 and 2013. It was depicted as an active private airfield on the 2009 Detroit Sectional Chart but was no longer shown on the 2013 edition of the same chart.
No official reason for the closure has been published. However, Erb Acres was a small, privately owned, private-use airfield. The closure is consistent with common reasons for such airfields to cease operations, such as the owner's retirement, sale of the property, prohibitive costs of maintenance and insurance, or a simple lack of desire to continue operating it. There is no evidence to suggest it was closed due to a specific accident, regulatory action, or for military conversion.
The site of the former Erb Acres Airport is now private agricultural land. Satellite imagery of the coordinates shows that the former north-south turf runway is no longer maintained for aviation. While a faint outline of the strip is still visible, the area has been fully integrated into the surrounding farmland and appears to be used as a hayfield. The adjacent farm buildings remain, but there are no longer any signs of active aviation infrastructure like hangars or runway markers.
Erb Acres Airport was a modest general aviation airfield with limited historical impact beyond its local use. Activated around 1970, its primary function was to serve its owner, Donald Erb, and any other pilots granted permission to use it. It featured a single turf runway (designated 18/36) with dimensions of approximately 2,000 by 100 feet. The airport never hosted commercial or scheduled flights and was a typical example of the thousands of private grass strips established across rural America for recreational flying and personal transportation during the latter half of the 20th century.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Erb Acres Airport. The land has been reverted to agricultural use for over a decade. Re-establishing an airport on the site would require significant effort, investment, and recertification, which is highly unlikely for a former private strip. The property remains in private hands, and there is no public or commercial interest in its revival as an aviation facility.
