The airport was officially marked as 'Closed' on FAA aeronautical charts between November 2015 and May 2016. The deactivation of the airfield likely occurred after the death of its owner, Jesse Short, in 2014.
The closure was due to personal reasons, not economic or regulatory issues. As a private-use airport, its operation was tied directly to its owner. Following the owner's death, the airport was formally closed as there was no one to maintain and operate it.
The site is now inactive as an airport. Recent satellite imagery shows that the faint outline of the north-south grass runway is still visible on the private property. The land appears to be maintained as part of a larger residential or agricultural parcel, with the former runway simply being a mowed field. There are no aircraft, hangars, or other signs of active aviation use.
Short Airport was a privately owned, private-use general aviation airport. It was owned and operated by Jesse Short of Eubank, KY. The facility consisted of a single turf runway, designated 18/36, with dimensions of approximately 2,000 feet in length and 100 feet in width. Its operations were limited to personal, recreational flying by the owner and possibly invited guests. It would have accommodated small, single-engine aircraft such as Cessnas or Pipers capable of short, unpaved field operations. Its significance is representative of the numerous private 'farm strips' established across the United States during the mid-to-late 20th century, serving the personal aviation needs of individuals rather than the public.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Short Airport. Given that it was a private field whose existence was tied to a specific individual, its revival is highly improbable. The land will almost certainly continue to be used for private residential or agricultural purposes by its current owners.
