Igloo Heliport

Economic reasons. Igloo Heliport was not a public or military facility but a private heliport directly associated with a tourist lodge and restaurant complex. Its closure was a direct result of the business it served either closing or changing ownership, leading to the discontinuation of its helicopter tour operations.

The site has been completely repurposed. The property was sold and is now a private lodge/residence known as the 'Denali Wildland Scape'. While the circular clearing of the former helipad is still clearly visible in satellite imagery, it is no longer marked or maintained for aviation use and now functions as a lawn or open yard space for the private property. It is definitively closed to all air traffic.

The heliport's significance is rooted in the local tourism industry of the Denali National Park corridor. It served as a base for commercial helicopter flightseeing tours, offering tourists convenient access to aerial views of the Alaska Range and surrounding wilderness. Its location on the Parks Highway (AK-3) made it an accessible stop for travelers. The name 'Igloo' was likely a branding choice related to its proximity to geographic features within the park, such as Igloo Creek and Igloo Mountain, and was not related to military DEW Line sites of a similar name.

There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Igloo Heliport. The land is under private ownership and is used for residential/lodging purposes. The regional market for flightseeing tours is well-served by several established operators based closer to the Denali National Park entrance and in Healy. Reopening the heliport is considered extremely unlikely.
