The airport was closed sometime between 1982 and 1993. It was last depicted on the 1982 Omaha Sectional Aeronautical Chart and was absent from subsequent charts. A 1998 FAA directory listed its status as 'Closed indefinitely'.
The specific reason is not officially documented. However, as a privately owned airfield, the closure was most likely due to the owner's personal decision. Common reasons for such closures include the owner's retirement, the sale of the property, or the high cost and effort of maintenance. The subsequent development of a private residence on the property strongly suggests it was permanently converted from aviation to residential use.
The site is now private residential property. A large home and several outbuildings have been constructed on the southern portion of the former airfield, directly on the old runway's footprint. While the faint, linear outline of the northern part of the turf runway is still visible on satellite imagery as a mowed grassy area, it is no longer maintained or used as an airstrip.
Bil Lo Airport was a small, private general aviation airfield. Its name was a portmanteau of its owners, William and Lois Engel. First appearing on aeronautical charts in 1969, it served the local aviation community for recreational flying. The airport featured a single unpaved, 2,600-foot turf runway aligned approximately north-south. It was a characteristic example of the numerous private airstrips that supported general aviation in the mid-20th century but held no significant commercial or military role.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Bil Lo Airport. The land has been permanently repurposed for residential use, and the presence of permanent structures on the former runway makes any return to aviation operations infeasible without significant demolition and redevelopment.
