September 20, 2017. This is the official closure date recorded by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
Economic and operational factors. The heliport was a private facility serving an office park. It was likely closed due to a combination of high maintenance and insurance costs, low utilization, and the property owner no longer seeing a business need for it. This is a common reason for the closure of private corporate heliports, especially as urban areas become more dense and the perceived value of such an amenity diminishes.
The site of the former heliport is now simply the top level of the parking garage for the office building at 901 S MoPac Expressway. Satellite imagery confirms that all aviation markings, such as the helipad 'H' and landing circle, have been removed or have weathered away completely. The area is now used exclusively for vehicle parking, with no remaining aviation infrastructure.
Barton Oaks Heliport, which also used the FAA identifier 74TX, was a private-use rooftop helipad situated atop the parking garage for Building IV of the Barton Oaks Plaza office complex. Its primary purpose was to provide convenient air transport for executives and clients of the companies leasing space in the complex. Operations typically involved light single-engine or twin-engine helicopters (e.g., Bell 206, Eurocopter AS350) for flights to and from major airports like Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, other corporate headquarters, or regional facilities, allowing passengers to bypass city traffic. It represented a type of corporate amenity that was more common in the late 20th century for premier office developments.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the heliport. Reopening is considered extremely unlikely. The trend for private heliports in dense urban and suburban areas is closure, not revival, due to increasing operational costs, liability concerns, noise complaints from nearby residential areas, and airspace congestion. The original business case for the heliport likely no longer exists for the current property owners.
