The airport was closed sometime between 1993 and 2004. It was depicted on the 1993 Omaha Sectional Aeronautical Chart but was no longer present on the 2004 edition of the chart.
The specific reason is not publicly documented, which is common for small, privately owned airfields. The closure was most likely due to economic factors, the sale of the property for agricultural use, or the owner no longer wishing or being able to maintain it. There is no evidence of military conversion or a specific incident forcing its closure.
The site of the former airport has been fully converted back to agricultural use. Current satellite imagery of the coordinates shows active farmland, including cultivated fields and several farm buildings with grain silos. Faint outlines of the former north/south runway are still discernible in the fields, but the land is now part of a working farm.
Elge Field was a small, private general aviation airfield, likely named after the family who owned the property. It was operational from at least the mid-1960s. It featured a single unpaved turf runway, oriented approximately north/south, with a length of about 2,600 feet. The airfield primarily served light private aircraft for personal and recreational use, and may have also supported agricultural aviation (crop dusting) operations, a common activity in this rural region of Nebraska.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Elge Field. The land is privately owned and has been fully integrated into agricultural operations for many years. The general aviation needs of the Aurora area are adequately served by the nearby Aurora Municipal Airport (Al Potter Field - KAUH), making the redevelopment of Elge Field highly improbable.
