Approximately between 1969 and 1972. The airport was actively depicted on the 1969 Green Bay Sectional Chart but was no longer shown on the 1972 edition of the same chart, indicating it was closed and decommissioned within that timeframe.
While no single official reason is documented, evidence strongly suggests the airport was closed for economic and real estate development purposes. The land, situated in a desirable location on the shore of Lake Metonga, was more valuable for residential development than for operating a small, private airfield. This is a common reason for the closure of many small, privately-owned airports in scenic locations.
The airport is permanently closed and the site has been significantly redeveloped. The faint outline of the former turf runway is still visible in satellite imagery as a long, straight clearing, but it is now overgrown with grass and trees. The land is occupied by private residential homes and properties, some of which are built directly on the former airfield footprint. The legacy of the airport is preserved in the name of a local street at the north end of the former property, 'Airport Road'.
Island View Airport was a private general aviation airfield active from the late 1950s to the early 1970s. It was operated by the Island View Resort and its primary function was to serve as a 'fly-in' destination for resort guests and private pilots visiting for tourism and recreation, such as fishing and boating on Lake Metonga. The facility consisted of a single unpaved, north/south turf runway measuring approximately 2,200 feet. Its history is representative of the many small, resort-oriented airfields that supported the post-war tourism boom in northern Wisconsin.
There are no plans or prospects for reopening Island View Airport. The site has been irreversibly converted to residential use with permanent structures built on the former runway and surrounding land, making any future aviation use physically and legally impossible. The general aviation needs of the Crandon area are served by the nearby public-use Crandon-Forest County Airport (KY55).
