On or around May 18, 2016.
The heliport closed as a direct result of the permanent closure of the Lincoln Regional Hospital, which it served. The hospital's parent company, Community Health Systems (CHS), cited economic reasons for shutting down the facility, specifically declining patient volumes and a strategic shift towards outpatient services.
The physical helipad, a concrete pad marked with an 'H', still exists on the property but is no longer a registered or operational heliport. The entire former hospital site was vacant for several years following the 2016 closure. In February 2024, Lincoln County officially purchased the property with plans to redevelop it into a government services complex, which may house various county offices, the health department, and emergency services.
The Lincoln Regional Hospital Heliport was a private-use facility crucial for medical air transport in Fayetteville and the surrounding rural Lincoln County area. Its primary function was to support the hospital's emergency department by facilitating medevac operations. It allowed for the rapid arrival of critically injured or ill patients via air ambulance services (such as Vanderbilt LifeFlight or Air Evac Lifeteam) and enabled swift transfers of patients requiring specialized care to larger trauma centers in cities like Nashville, TN, or Huntsville, AL. The heliport's existence significantly enhanced the region's access to critical and emergency medical care.
There are no plans or prospects to reopen the facility as the Lincoln Regional Hospital Heliport. The hospital it was designed to serve is permanently closed. While it is conceivable that the new county owner could establish a new heliport for its emergency services at the site in the future, the original US-10256 heliport will not be reactivated in its former capacity.
