Between 1968 and 1977. The airport was depicted on the 1968 Washington Sectional Chart but was no longer shown on the 1977 chart. This indicates it was closed and abandoned sometime within that nine-year period.
Relocation of operations. The owner and operator, Abe Cohen, established a new, larger private airfield named Sunset Airport (FAA ID: 5PA1) approximately one mile to the northeast. The closure of the original Cohen Airport was a direct result of this relocation, not due to economic failure, accidents, or external pressures. The land of the original airport was subsequently sold.
The site of the former Cohen Airport has been completely reclaimed for agricultural use. Current satellite imagery shows the area as active farmland. While a very faint linear trace of the former north-south runway can sometimes be discerned in the fields depending on crop patterns and lighting, no physical remnants of the airport, such as hangars, buildings, or runway markers, exist today. The land is privately owned and not accessible to the public.
Cohen Airport was a small, private general aviation airfield typical of the post-WWII aviation boom. It was established by and named for its owner, local pilot Abe Cohen. First appearing on aeronautical charts in 1953, it featured a single unpaved, 2,000-foot turf runway aligned approximately north-south. The airport served as a base for Mr. Cohen's personal aircraft and likely catered to other local private pilots. Its significance is rooted in local aviation history as a representative of the numerous private grass strips that supported recreational flying in rural America during the mid-20th century. The identifier 'US-10249' is a non-standard code from a third-party database and not an official ICAO or FAA identifier.
None. The airport has been permanently closed for approximately 50 years, and the land has been fully converted to another use. The subsequent airport built by the same owner (Sunset Airport) is also now permanently closed. There are no existing plans, discussions, or prospects for reopening an airport at this location.
