Circa early 2010s. The airport was listed as closed in aviation databases by 2013. Analysis of historical satellite imagery shows the runway was visible and appeared maintained in 2011, but shows significant overgrowth and disuse in images from 2017 onwards, supporting a closure within that timeframe.
The specific reason is not publicly documented. As a private airfield, the closure was almost certainly due to a private decision by the landowner. Common reasons for such closures include the owner selling the property, ceasing to fly, the high cost and liability of maintenance, or the owner's death. There is no evidence of closure due to an accident, military conversion, or broader economic factors.
The site has reverted to undeveloped rural land. Recent satellite imagery shows the faint, overgrown outline of the former north-south dirt runway. The land appears to be used as pasture or open range, consistent with the surrounding ranching area. A dirt road or track now crosses the southern portion of the former strip, confirming it is no longer used for aviation.
Keiley Ranch Strip was a small, private-use airstrip. Its purpose was to serve the associated ranch, providing personal and recreational air access to a relatively remote area of Montana. Operations would have been limited to light, single-engine aircraft capable of landing on a short, unpaved, high-elevation runway (e.g., Cessna 182, Piper Super Cub, or other 'bush planes'). The airport held no known public, commercial, or military significance and was never part of the national public airport system.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the airport. As the land is privately owned and the airstrip has been defunct for over a decade, any prospect of reopening is considered extremely unlikely and would depend entirely on the current landowner's interest and investment.
