The airfield was closed sometime between 1990 and 1998. It was depicted on the 1990 Dallas-Ft. Worth Sectional Chart but was no longer present on the 1998 edition. Aerial photography from 1995 shows the runway was still intact but appeared unused, with residential development beginning on the southern portion of the property by 2003. This suggests the closure occurred in the mid-1990s.
The closure was a result of urban encroachment and economic factors. As the city of Lawton expanded northeastward, the land occupied by the airfield became increasingly valuable for residential development. The owner ultimately sold the property to developers, a common fate for small, privately-owned airports located near growing urban centers.
The site of the former Jerry-Wright Airfield has been completely redeveloped into a residential housing subdivision. The entire area, including the former runway and any associated structures, is now covered with single-family homes, lawns, and streets. The memory of the airfield is preserved in some of the local street names, such as NE J.W. Drive and NE Wright Drive, which are direct references to the founder, Jerry Wright.
Jerry-Wright Airfield was a private general aviation airport established sometime between 1965 and 1968. It was owned and operated by its namesake, Jerry Wright. The airfield featured a single north/south turf runway (17/35) measuring approximately 2,640 feet. For nearly 30 years, it served the local general aviation community, providing a base for private pilots and their light aircraft. It was a characteristic example of a small, private-use airstrip that supported recreational flying and personal transport.
There are zero prospects for reopening the airfield. The land has been permanently and irreversibly converted to a dense residential use, making any future aviation operations at this location impossible.
