Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 26, 2025
Closure Date

Between 1996 and 2002. The airport was last listed in the 1996 AOPA Airport Directory and was no longer depicted on the 2002 San Antonio aeronautical chart. Aerial imagery from 2004 shows the hangars had been removed and the land was being prepared for new construction.

Reason for Closure

Economic reasons, specifically urban encroachment and real estate development. The airport was located in a rapidly growing suburban area of San Antonio. The increasing value of the land for residential housing made it more profitable to sell and develop than to continue operating a small, private airfield. This is a common fate for many general aviation airports located near expanding metropolitan areas.

Current Status

The site of the former airport has been completely redeveloped and is now a dense, single-family residential subdivision. The area where the runway and hangars once stood is now occupied by homes, streets (such as Bentwood Ranch and Town Creek), and community infrastructure. There are no remaining physical traces of the airport.

Historical Significance

Kardys Airport was a privately-owned, public-use general aviation airfield established sometime between 1963 and 1968. It was owned and operated by A.F. Kardy. The airport featured a single turf runway, initially 2,600 feet long and later listed as 2,640 feet, designated as Runway 16/34. It served the local aviation community, providing a base for recreational pilots and their single-engine aircraft. The airfield had several small hangars and was a characteristic example of the small, privately-run airports that were once common across the United States before widespread suburban development.

Reopening Prospects

There are zero plans or prospects for reopening Kardys Airport. The land has been irrevocably converted to a high-density residential use, making any future aviation activity at this location impossible from a practical, legal, and financial standpoint.
