The airport was closed sometime between 1971 and 1980. It was last depicted on the 1971 San Francisco Sectional Chart but was no longer present on the 1980 edition of the chart.
The specific reason for the closure is not officially documented. As a private airfield associated with a ranch, the closure was most likely due to economic factors or a change in ownership. Common reasons for such closures include the owner ceasing aviation activities, the death of the owner, or the decision to convert the land to more profitable agricultural use, which appears to be the case here.
The site of the former airport is now completely occupied by an agricultural orchard, most likely growing almonds or walnuts. Satellite imagery shows that the land has been fully converted for farming, with rows of trees planted over the former runway area. While a very faint outline of the runway is barely discernible from the air, there are no physical remnants of the airport, such as hangars, buildings, or runway markings, on the ground.
Yandell Ranch Airport (also known as Yandell Field) was a private general aviation airfield established in the early 1950s. Its primary purpose was to serve the agricultural and personal transportation needs of the Yandell Ranch. It featured a single unpaved, north-south runway with a length of approximately 2,200 feet. The airport was a characteristic example of the numerous private airstrips that supported California's Central Valley agricultural industry during the mid-20th century, used for crop dusting, supply transport, and personal travel for the ranch owners.
There are no plans or prospects for reopening Yandell Ranch Airport. The land has been successfully and profitably redeveloped for agriculture for over 40 years. Reverting the mature orchard back to an airfield would be economically and logistically prohibitive. Therefore, the prospect of it ever returning to aviation use is virtually nonexistent.
