The airport was closed between 2005 and 2007. Aerial imagery from February 2005 shows an active airport, while imagery from February 2007 shows large 'X' markings on the runway indicating permanent closure. The physical airport infrastructure remained derelict until around 2017 when it was demolished for redevelopment.
Economic reasons driven by urban sprawl. The airport was located in a prime area for development as the western suburbs of Huntsville and Madison expanded rapidly. The land became significantly more valuable for commercial and residential use, leading to its sale to developers.
The site has been completely and irreversibly redeveloped into a large, master-planned, mixed-use community called 'Town Madison'. The former airport grounds are now occupied by retail centers, restaurants (such as the Margaritaville hotel and restaurant), apartments, residential homes, and office space. A major landmark on the former airport property is Toyota Field, the baseball stadium for the Rocket City Trash Pandas, the Double-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels.
Originally opened in the early 1960s as Madison County Airport, its FAA identifier was M82. It was later renamed Spinelli Field in honor of Joe Spinelli, a local aviation enthusiast and member of the parachute club based there. For over 40 years, it served as a vital general aviation hub for the community. The airport featured a single 3,100-foot paved runway (18/36) and supported private pilots, flight instruction, and recreational flying. It was notably the home of the Madison County Sport Parachute Club, making it a center for local skydiving activities.
There are zero prospects for reopening. The land has been permanently transformed into a high-density urban development. The original runway, hangars, and all associated aviation infrastructure have been completely removed and built over, making a return to aviation use impossible.
