The airport was closed sometime between 2004 and 2008. Aeronautical charts from 2004 still depicted the airport as active. However, satellite imagery from 2008 shows the land being cleared for redevelopment, with the runway no longer in use.
The closure was due to economic reasons, specifically urban encroachment and real estate development. The land, located in a growing suburban area east of Houston, became more valuable for residential housing than as a private airfield. The owner sold the property to developers to build a new section of a master-planned community.
The site of the former Roeder Airport has been completely redeveloped and is now unrecognizable as an airfield. The land is occupied by a significant portion of the 'Newport' residential subdivision, a large master-planned community. The area where the runway and hangar once stood is now covered with single-family homes, streets (such as Port O Call Street and Flying Bridge), and community infrastructure. There are no remaining traces of the airport.
Roeder Airport was a small, privately-owned general aviation airfield. It was not a commercial or military facility. Its primary function was to serve the personal aviation needs of its owner and potentially a few other local pilots. The airport featured a single, paved north-south runway, estimated to be around 3,500 feet long, and at least one hangar. Operations would have consisted of recreational flying, private aircraft storage, and possibly flight instruction. Its historical significance is local, representing a type of private airfield that has become increasingly rare as urban areas expand.
None. The prospect of reopening Roeder Airport is zero. The land has been permanently and densely repurposed for residential use, making it physically and economically impossible to ever re-establish an airport at this location.
