Circa 2015-2017. An exact date is not publicly recorded, but the heliport's closure aligns with the final decommissioning of the Toledo Edison steam plant it served, which ceased providing steam to downtown Toledo in 2017.
Economic and operational obsolescence. The heliport was a private facility exclusively serving the Toledo Edison Acme Power Plant (also known as the Water Street Station). When the plant was fully decommissioned and subsequently sold for redevelopment, the operational need for the on-site heliport was eliminated.
The heliport is permanently closed and defunct. The rooftop markings have been removed or have completely faded. The entire former power plant site, including the building where the helipad was located, is part of a large-scale urban renewal project. The site was purchased by an affiliate of ProMedica and is being transformed into a mixed-use development featuring parks, public spaces, and commercial/residential properties as part of Toledo's 'Glass City Riverwalk' project.
Delaware Operations Heliport was a private, rooftop helipad located atop a building at the historic Toledo Edison Acme Power Plant on the Maumee River. It was not a public facility. Its primary function was to support the operations of the utility company, likely used for executive transportation, aerial surveys of the electrical grid and power lines, and potentially for rapid response during power outages or emergencies. Its history is directly tied to the industrial heritage of downtown Toledo and the operations of FirstEnergy's subsidiary, Toledo Edison.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the heliport. The site's current redevelopment into a public-focused park and mixed-use district is incompatible with the operation of a private industrial heliport. The future of the site is focused on recreation, residential, and commercial use, not aviation.
