Approximately between 1970 and 1976. The airport was depicted on the 1970 Cleveland Sectional Chart but was absent from the 1976 edition, indicating it closed sometime within that six-year period.
The closure was due to economic reasons driven by urban sprawl. As the suburbs of Cleveland expanded westward, the land value for real estate development surpassed its value as a small general aviation airport. The owners ultimately sold the property to developers for the construction of a residential subdivision.
The site of the former airport has been completely redeveloped and is now the 'Westwood Farms' housing development. The area where the runway and hangars once stood is now occupied by single-family homes, streets (such as Westwood Farms Circle), and suburban landscaping. There are no remaining visible traces of the airport.
Gilbert Airport was a privately-owned, public-use general aviation airport that was a hub for the local flying community from the early 1950s until its closure. Owned and operated by Norman and Arlene Gilbert, it featured a single north-south turf runway (18/36) that was initially around 2,200 feet and later extended to 2,400 feet. It served as a classic post-war grass strip, primarily handling light single-engine aircraft like Pipers and Cessnas. The airport was a base for private pilots and at least one flying club, contributing to the culture of private aviation in the Cleveland area during that era.
There are zero prospects for reopening. The land has been permanently and densely redeveloped for residential use, making any return to aviation operations impossible.
