Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 26, 2025
Closure Date

Approximately between 1998 and 2002. The airport was still listed on the 1998 DFW Sectional Chart but was no longer listed in the 2004 FAA Airport/Facility Directory. Aerial imagery from 2002 shows the runway marked with closed 'X' symbols, indicating operations had ceased by then.

Reason for Closure

Urban encroachment and real estate development. The airport was located in a rapidly growing suburban area of Denton. The owner, Windy Hill Inc., sold the land for a more profitable use. The value of the land for residential housing far surpassed its value as a small, private airfield.

Current Status

The site has been completely redeveloped into a residential housing subdivision called 'Windy Hill Estates'. The main thoroughfare of the neighborhood, 'Windy Hill Road', was built directly over the former runway and follows its exact alignment. In a nod to the site's past, several other streets in the development have aviation-themed names, such as Propeller Drive, Kitty Hawk Lane, and Wright Brothers Court.

Historical Significance

Windy Hill Airport (FAA LID: 5TS0) was a privately-owned, private-use general aviation airfield. It was established sometime between 1973 and 1978. The airport featured a single turf runway, approximately 2,600 feet long and 100 feet wide. It primarily served a small community of local pilots for recreational flying in light, single-engine aircraft. It had a few small hangars and was a characteristic example of the numerous small, private grass strips that once dotted the landscape around major US cities before being consumed by suburban sprawl.

Reopening Prospects

There are no plans or prospects for reopening the airport. The land has been permanently and densely redeveloped for residential use, making any future aviation activity at this location impossible.
