The airport was closed because it was replaced by a new, more modern facility. The original airport, which had an unpaved turf runway, was considered inadequate for the growing needs of the community. A new airport, the current Gaffney/Cherokee County Airport (KDKA), was constructed a few miles away with a paved runway and superior infrastructure, leading to the closure and subsequent redevelopment of the original site.
The former airport site has been completely redeveloped into the Cherokee County Industrial Park. Numerous large industrial and manufacturing facilities now occupy the land where the runway and hangars once stood. While the airport is gone, its legacy is preserved in the name of the main access road, 'Gaffney Airport Road'. The faint outline of the former northeast/southwest runway can still be discerned in satellite imagery of the area.
Originally established between 1945 and 1954, this facility was first known as Gaffney Airport and later as the (original) Cherokee County Airport. It served as the primary general aviation airfield for the Gaffney area for approximately two decades. Operations were typical for a small municipal airport of its era, supporting private pilots, flight training, and local business aviation. According to records from the 1950s and 1960s, it featured a single unpaved/turf runway, initially 2,600 feet long and later extended to 3,200 feet (designated Runway 4/22). It was a vital local aviation hub before being made obsolete by its replacement.
None. There are no plans or prospects for reopening the airport. The site has been fully and permanently repurposed for industrial use. The aviation needs of Gaffney and Cherokee County are served by the newer Gaffney/Cherokee County Airport (KDKA), which is located approximately 5 miles east-northeast of the original airport's location.
