Circa 1981-1982. The airport was last depicted on the 1981 St. Louis Sectional Chart and was officially listed as 'Airport Closed' in the 1982 AOPA Airports USA directory.
Urban encroachment and economic factors. The rapid suburban growth of St. Peters during the late 1970s and early 1980s made the land significantly more valuable for residential development than for use as a private airfield. The property was sold and redeveloped to meet housing demand.
The airport site has been completely redeveloped and no longer exists. The land is now occupied by a dense residential neighborhood, specifically the Tanglewood subdivision, and is adjacent to Laurel Park in St. Peters. There are no visible remnants of the runway, hangars, or any other airport infrastructure.
Sontimer Airport was a small, privately-owned general aviation airfield. It was established sometime between 1968 and 1972 and was owned by William Sontimer. The airport featured a single unpaved turf runway, designated 18/36, with a length of approximately 2,100 feet. It primarily served local private pilots and their light aircraft, contributing to the general aviation community in St. Charles County before the area became heavily developed. It was never a commercial or military facility and its significance was purely local.
None. The prospect of reopening Sontimer Airport is zero. The land has been fully and permanently repurposed for residential use. Reacquiring the numerous private properties, demolishing the homes, and reconstructing an airport in a now-populated suburban area is legally, financially, and politically impossible.
