Circa 2012-2014. The airport's owner and operator, Elmer N. Anderson, passed away in November 2011. Analysis of historical satellite imagery shows the airstrip was still clearly defined in 2011, but by 2015, the land was being actively farmed. The associated hangar was removed between 2015 and 2017, confirming the permanent closure during this period.
The closure was a direct result of the death of its owner, creator, and sole operator, Elmer N. Anderson. As a private, personal-use airstrip, its existence was tied to his passion for aviation. Following his passing, there was no entity to continue its operation, and the land was reverted to its primary agricultural purpose by his estate.
The site of the former Elmer Airport has been fully reclaimed for agricultural use. The land where the runway and hangar once stood is now part of a cultivated crop field. All airport infrastructure, including the hangar, has been demolished and removed. Faint scars or outlines of the former north-south runway are still visible in high-resolution satellite imagery but there are no remaining structures on the ground.
Elmer Airport was a private turf airstrip that served a single purpose: general aviation for its owner. It was built and maintained by Elmer N. Anderson, a local lifelong farmer and avid pilot, for his personal aircraft. The airport had no commercial, military, or public charter operations. Its significance was purely local and personal, representing the passion for flight held by a private citizen in rural America. It typically would have consisted of a single grass runway and a hangar for the aircraft.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the airport. The land is privately owned and is being actively and productively farmed. Re-establishing an airport would require purchasing the land from the current owner and significant investment to rebuild all necessary infrastructure from scratch. Given these factors, the prospect of it ever reopening as an airport is effectively zero.
