Approximately between 1993 and 2003. The airport was last depicted on the San Diego Sectional Aeronautical Chart in 1993 and was confirmed to be closed by pilot reports in 2003. The exact date is unknown.
The airport was a privately owned field. It was closed following the death of its owner and operator, Bill Collings. Subsequently, the family sold the property, which was then redeveloped for residential use, making the airfield defunct.
The site is now a private residential estate. The land has been redeveloped with a large, modern house and outbuildings constructed near the former hangar area. While the faint outline of the dirt runway is still visible in satellite imagery, it is overgrown, no longer maintained, and is bisected by a private driveway. The property is strictly private and is no longer usable as an airport.
Rancho Vallecito was a classic private-use, backcountry airstrip. It featured a single, unpaved 2,600-foot runway (designated 12/30) and at least one hangar. The airport primarily served the owner's personal general aviation aircraft and those of his guests. It was known among the local aviation community for its challenging nature, including its location in hilly terrain and its 'one-way' operational characteristic (landing uphill to the southeast, taking off downhill to the northwest) due to the surrounding topography. It represented a type of private recreational airfield that was more common in the mid-20th century.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Rancho Vallecito Airport. The conversion of the property to a private residential estate makes any future aviation use extremely unlikely.
