The airport closed sometime between 1998 and 2004. The last known depiction on an aeronautical chart was on the 1998 Dallas-Fort Worth Sectional Chart. By the time the 2004 chart was published, it was no longer listed. Satellite imagery from 2004 shows the runway beginning to fade, confirming its closure in the early 2000s.
The specific reason for the closure is not officially documented, which is common for small, private airfields. However, the evidence points to a cessation of private operations. The land was subsequently converted back to agricultural use, which is the predominant land use in the surrounding area. There is no indication that the closure was due to a major accident, military conversion, or broader economic downturn.
The site is currently private property and is used for agriculture. The former turf runway has been completely reclaimed for farming and is no longer visible from the ground. The faint outline of the north-south runway can still be discerned in historical and current satellite imagery, but the land is actively cultivated with crops. Any associated structures like hangars have either been removed or repurposed for farm use. The site is not accessible to the public.
West Airpark (formerly identified by the FAA as 1TA7) was a small, private general aviation airport. Its significance was purely local, serving the needs of private pilots in and around the community of West, Texas. It was first depicted on aeronautical charts in the late 1960s. The 1970 Texas Airport Directory described it as having a single 2,600-foot turf runway (17/35) and listed C.J. Smaistrla as the manager. Operations would have consisted of recreational flying, and potentially some agricultural aviation (crop dusting), typical for a rural grass strip. It was never served by commercial airlines and had no known military history.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening West Airpark. The land has been used for agriculture for approximately two decades, and re-establishing an airport would require significant private investment to acquire the land and reconstruct all necessary aviation infrastructure. Given the availability of other airports in the region, such as Waco Regional Airport (KACT), a reopening is considered highly unlikely.
