Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 26, 2025
Closure Date

Approximately 2015. Analysis of historical satellite imagery indicates the helipad was still present in January 2015 but had been demolished and paved over by January 2016.

Reason for Closure

Property redevelopment and change of tenant. The heliport was part of a corporate facility historically occupied by the oilfield services company Baker Hughes. The site was later redeveloped for its current tenant, Sunbelt Rentals, which had no need for a heliport. The helipad was removed to create additional space for an equipment storage yard and parking.

Current Status

The site is currently a large industrial equipment rental facility operated by Sunbelt Rentals. The physical helipad has been completely removed. The land where it was located is now part of a paved, fenced yard used for storing heavy machinery and company vehicles. There are no visible remnants of its past aviation use.

Historical Significance

Papa Heliport was a private-use heliport that served the corporate transport needs of its owner/operator, most likely Baker Hughes. Located at their facility at 16800 Imperial Valley Drive, it facilitated rapid transport for executives and key personnel, a common feature for major corporations in Houston's sprawling oil and gas sector. The heliport consisted of a single, ground-level concrete helipad marked with a standard 'H' landing designator. It did not serve the public and handled only private helicopter operations.

Reopening Prospects

None. The heliport infrastructure has been permanently removed, and the land has been fully integrated into the operations of the current commercial tenant. Re-establishing a heliport at this location is not feasible as it would require the demolition of the existing yard and a complete change in the site's current use.
