Approximately 2007-2008. The airport (formerly FAA identifier 6Y3) was listed as active in official publications until late 2007. It was deactivated around the time the resort faced significant financial changes and the land was repurposed for the first Rothbury Festival in 2008.
The closure was driven by a combination of economic factors and a strategic change in land use. The Double JJ Resort filed for bankruptcy protection in 2008, making the maintenance of a private airfield economically unfeasible. Concurrently, the land was repurposed to host the large-scale Rothbury Festival (now the Electric Forest festival), which represented a more profitable and sustainable use of the extensive property.
The site of the former airport is now fully integrated into the grounds of the Double JJ Resort and is a central part of the annual Electric Forest music festival. The former north-south runway area is now used for festival infrastructure, including major campgrounds (such as Maplewoods and parts of Good Life Village), vendor stalls, and access roads. The faint outline of the grass runway is still visible on satellite imagery, but it is completely unusable for aviation and is obstructed for most of the year.
The Double JJ Resort Ranch Airport was a private airfield established sometime between 1968 and 1970. It featured a single turf runway (Runway 18/36) measuring approximately 2,600 feet. Its sole purpose was to serve as a private fly-in destination for guests of the Double JJ Resort. It catered to general aviation pilots, allowing them to conveniently access the resort's amenities, such as horseback riding, golf, and lodging, by landing their personal aircraft directly on the property.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the airport. The land's value and function as part of the highly successful Electric Forest festival grounds far outweigh its potential use as a small private airstrip. The permanent and temporary infrastructure required for the festival makes a return to aviation operations logistically and economically impractical.
