The heliport was officially and permanently closed on September 20, 2012, according to Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) records.
The closure was due to a change in property ownership. The heliport was a private facility belonging to Mikelsons, Inc., a real estate development company. The company's founder, Frank Mikelsons, passed away in 2008. The property at 7101 N Mikelsons Way was subsequently sold, and the new owners had no need for a heliport. The closure was a direct result of the sale and redevelopment of the land.
The site has been completely redeveloped. It is now the location of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 481 headquarters and training center. The original heliport infrastructure, including the landing pad and any associated markings, has been removed and replaced by the new building and its surrounding parking lots. The street name, 'N Mikelsons Way', remains as a legacy of the original developer.
Mikelsons Heliport (FAA ID: 11IN) was a private-use facility that served as the corporate heliport for Mikelsons, Inc. The company, founded by prominent Indianapolis developer Frank Mikelsons, was instrumental in developing large portions of northwest Indianapolis, including the Park 100 industrial complex where the heliport was located. The heliport was used for executive transport, allowing for rapid travel between development sites, conducting aerial surveys of land, and general business aviation, showcasing the success and operational style of the development firm during its active years.
There are zero plans or prospects for reopening this heliport. The facility is permanently closed, and the land has been fully repurposed by its new owners. Re-establishing a heliport at this location is not feasible as it would require the demolition of the existing IBEW facility.
