Approximately between 1998 and 2004. The airfield was still depicted as active on the 1998 Phoenix Sectional Chart but was marked as a closed airfield on the 2004 chart.
The exact reason is not publicly documented, but the closure is consistent with trends for small, private airfields, especially those associated with educational institutions. The most probable causes are a combination of: 1) Prohibitive liability insurance costs. 2) Decreased need or interest in an aviation program or private air access. 3) High costs of maintenance and upkeep for a non-essential facility.
The airport is permanently closed and unmaintained. Satellite imagery clearly shows the faint but distinct outline of the former north-south runway on the school's property, located just west of the main campus buildings. The land appears to be used as an open field and parts of the former runway are used as an unimproved dirt track or road for campus vehicles. It is not usable for aviation.
The airport was a private airstrip known as Orme Ranch Airfield or Orme School Airport. It served the Orme School, a private college-preparatory boarding school founded on a large cattle ranch. Its primary operations included:
- Providing private air access for the school's founders, staff, and visitors.
- Supporting operations for the surrounding Orme Ranch.
- Potentially serving as a facility for a student aviation or flying club, a common feature for such schools in that era.
The airfield consisted of a single unpaved runway, estimated to be between 2,600 and 3,000 feet in length. It never handled commercial or scheduled flights and was strictly for private general aviation use.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the airport. Given the reasons for its likely closure (liability, cost) and the decades it has been abandoned, a reopening is considered extremely unlikely. The land remains an integral part of the Orme School campus.
