Approximately 2005-2006. The airport was depicted on the 1993 Dallas-Ft Worth Sectional Chart and was still visible and clear in a 2004 aerial photo. However, a 2006 aerial photo shows a large building and access road had been constructed over the southern portion of the runway, indicating it was closed by that time.
Redevelopment of the land for commercial use. The airport was a private field owned by the Kaddatz family. The land was repurposed to expand their other business, Kaddatz Auctioneering & Farm Equipment Sales, with permanent structures built directly on the former runway. This is a common economic reason for the closure of small, privately-owned airfields when the land becomes more valuable for other purposes.
The site is now the location of a commercial business, Kaddatz Auctioneering & Farm Equipment Sales. Large metal buildings, parking lots, and outdoor storage areas for farm machinery and other auction items now occupy the land. While the faint outline of the northern end of the former grass runway is still barely discernible in satellite imagery, the airfield is completely gone and the land has been fully repurposed.
Square K Airport (formerly FAA identifier: 4TA1) was a small, private general aviation airfield. Its primary function was to serve the personal aviation needs of its owner, Frank Kaddatz, and potentially other local pilots. It featured a single 2,600-foot unpaved turf runway (17/35). Its significance was purely local, providing a convenient landing strip for recreational and personal flying in the West, Texas area. It did not handle commercial or significant military operations.
None. The prospect of reopening is effectively zero. The land has been permanently redeveloped with large, fixed structures for an active commercial business built directly over the former runway. There are no known plans or any feasibility for converting the site back into an airport.
