The heliport was closed because the hospital it served, St. Anthony's Hospital, relocated to a new, modern facility at a different location (2801 St. Anthony Way, Pendleton). The closure was part of the complete decommissioning of the old hospital site. A new heliport (FAA Identifier: 9OR1) was built and commissioned at the new hospital, making the old one obsolete.
The site of the former heliport is part of the old St. Anthony's Hospital property located at 1601 SE Court Avenue. The helipad markings have been removed, and the area is no longer used for aviation. The old hospital building itself has been sold and is undergoing redevelopment into a mixed-use residential and commercial complex called 'The 1601'. The former heliport area is now integrated into the grounds or parking of this redeveloped property.
St Anthony's Hospital Heliport was a private-use facility that served as a critical component of the regional Helicopter Emergency Medical Services (HEMS) network for Eastern Oregon. Its primary operation was to support air ambulance services, most notably Life Flight Network, allowing for the rapid transport of critically injured or ill patients from rural and remote accident scenes or smaller medical facilities. It was essential for the hospital's function as a Level IV trauma center, enabling swift access to emergency and intensive care, and facilitating transfers to larger, more specialized hospitals when necessary.
There are zero prospects for reopening this heliport. Its function has been permanently replaced by the new, fully operational heliport at the current St. Anthony's Hospital location. The original site is being repurposed for non-medical, commercial, and residential use, making a return to aviation activities impossible.
