The airport was officially closed sometime between 1992 and 2000. The 1998 FAA Airport/Facility Directory listed it as 'Airport closed indefinitely'. Aerial imagery from 2000 confirms its closure, showing a large closed-runway 'X' marking on the field, indicating it was no longer operational by that year.
While no single official reason is documented, the closure was almost certainly due to economic factors and real estate development pressure. Like many small, privately-owned airfields, the land became more valuable for residential use than for aviation. The subsequent redevelopment of the entire site into a housing subdivision confirms that the land was sold for this purpose.
The site of the former Bark River Airport has been completely redeveloped into a residential subdivision. The entire area, including the former runway and hangar locations, is now occupied by single-family homes, yards, and suburban streets. As a tribute to the site's past, two of the streets in the modern subdivision are named 'Aviation Drive' and 'Hangar Court'. No physical remnants of the airport itself exist today.
Bark River Airport (FAA identifier: 3WI4) was a small, private general aviation airfield established sometime between 1979 and 1982. It primarily served the local recreational flying community. The airport featured a single 2,600-foot unpaved turf runway designated 18/36 and had a few small hangars located on the northeast side of the property. According to a 1986 directory, it was operated by the 'Bark River Corp.' and managed by R. Daggett. Its operations were limited to light, single-engine aircraft, and it played a modest role as a local hub for private pilots.
There are zero prospects for reopening the airport. The land has been permanently and fully converted to high-density residential use, making any return to aviation operations impossible.
