Approximately 2008-2009. The airfield ceased operations after its primary and sole tenant, Skydive Dallas, relocated to a new facility in Whitewright, TX.
Economic reasons and urban development. The land occupied by the airfield, located in a prime position along the rapidly growing I-35W corridor north of Fort Worth, was sold for large-scale industrial development. This forced the relocation of the skydiving operation and the permanent closure of the field.
The site has been completely redeveloped and is unrecognizable as an airfield. The land is now occupied by a massive Amazon Fulfillment Center (warehouse code: FTW1), which opened in 2013. All traces of the runway, hangars, and drop zone facilities have been obliterated by the warehouse and its surrounding parking lots and infrastructure.
Drop Field was a private airfield that served as a dedicated skydiving drop zone. Its historical significance is tied directly to its long-time operator, 'Skydive Dallas', which was one of the premier skydiving centers in the North Texas region. The facility featured a single, unpaved north/south grass runway (approximately 2,600 feet long) and associated buildings for parachute packing and training. For over a decade, it was a central hub for recreational, tandem, and competitive skydiving in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex.
Zero. The land has been permanently and completely repurposed for large-scale industrial use. There are no plans or possibilities for the airport to ever reopen at this location.
