The airport was officially closed on March 20, 2001. It was operational from approximately the late 1970s until its closure.
The primary reason for the closure was economic redevelopment. The land was repurposed for industrial use, specifically for the construction of an oil and gas storage and processing facility which now occupies the site.
The former airport site has been completely transformed into an industrial complex. Satellite imagery confirms the location is now occupied by a large oil and gas facility, featuring numerous storage tanks, pipelines, and processing equipment. The faint outline of the former runway is barely visible under the industrial development, but all functional airport infrastructure has been removed.
Pavlat Airport was a small, privately-owned airfield serving the general aviation community. Named after its owner, L.J. Pavlat, it first appeared on aviation charts around 1978. The airport featured a single unpaved turf runway, approximately 2,600 feet long, oriented north/south. It primarily handled light, single-engine aircraft for recreational flying and personal transport for local pilots. It held no major commercial or military significance but was a part of the local aviation infrastructure in Liberty County for over two decades.
There are no plans or prospects for reopening Pavlat Airport. The extensive and permanent industrial development on the property makes any return to aviation use infeasible from both a logistical and financial standpoint.
