The airport was closed sometime between 1993 and 2004. It was last depicted on the 1993 Del Rio Sectional Chart but was no longer present on the 2004 edition of the same chart. Aerial photos from 1998 show a well-defined runway, while later images show it becoming overgrown.
As a private airfield, no official reason was published. However, the closure is almost certainly due to reasons typical for private ranch airstrips: the property may have changed ownership, the owner may have ceased flying activities, or the airstrip simply fell into disuse and was no longer maintained due to cost or lack of necessity.
The site remains part of a private ranch. The former runway is completely abandoned and unmaintained. Satellite imagery clearly shows the faint outline of the north/south runway being reclaimed by the surrounding scrubland and vegetation. The land is used for private ranching and is not publicly accessible.
Mills Ranch Airport (also known as Mills Field) was a private airstrip serving the remote Mills Ranch in Val Verde County. First appearing on aeronautical charts around 1970, it featured a single, 4,000-foot unpaved runway. Its purpose was to provide convenient air access to a vast and isolated property, typical for large Texas ranches. Operations would have included private transportation for the ranch owners and guests, support for ranching activities (e.g., checking fences, locating livestock), and potentially facilitating hunting expeditions in the rugged area.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the airport. Given that it was a private facility that has been defunct for over 20 years, any potential for reopening would be solely dependent on the current landowner's desire and financial ability to restore it for personal use. There is no public or commercial incentive for its restoration.
